Prosthodontist vs. General Dentist

Both are registered dental professionals.

The difference is depth of training, scope of complexity, and the level of case they’re equipped to manage.

General Dentist

TYPICAL CASES

Check-ups, fillings, extractions, simple crowns, whitening, straightforward single implants.

TRAINING

Undergraduate dental degree (5 years). Registered as a general dentist with AHPRA.

TREATMENT PLANNING

Plans care for individual teeth in relatively straightforward situations.

WHEN YOU’RE REFERRED

Handles most dental care. May refer to a specialist when a case exceeds their scope.

Special Prosthodontist

TYPICAL CASES

Additional 3+ years of full-time university postgraduate specialist training after the dental degree. Registered as a dental specialist with AHPRA.

TRAINING

Complex restorations – multiple missing teeth, full arch reconstruction, severely worn dentitions, failed prior dental work, difficult implant cases.

TREATMENT PLANNING

Plans the entire mouth as a system – coordinating implants, crowns, bite correction, and aesthetics in a single integrated blueprint.

WHEN YOU’RE REFERRED

Receives referral from general dentists and specialists to deal with complex cases and failed dental work. We see patients without referrals too.
