Prosthodontics is one of 13 dental specialties formally recognised by the Australian Dental Council and the Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency (AHPRA). The word comes from the Latin prothesis (replacement) and odontos (tooth) — literally, the specialty of replacing and restoring teeth.

“Prosthodontics addresses not just how your teeth look, but how they function — and how that function affects your overall quality of life.”

A Prosthodontist diagnoses, plans, and treats conditions involving missing, broken, worn-down, or otherwise compromised teeth and the surrounding oral structures. Their scope includes anything from a single implant crown to rebuilding an entire mouth that has been affected by grinding, gum disease, trauma, or decades of dental neglect.

Critically, Prosthodontics is concerned with both function and aesthetics — but always function first. A beautiful result that doesn’t bite correctly or last long is not good prosthodontic care. When MDS designs your smile, the starting point is always how your teeth work together as a system.

Because of this complexity, Prosthodontists are trained in dental materials science, occlusion (how teeth meet), implant dentistry, and the biomechanics of the jaw — a depth of knowledge that goes far beyond what a general dental degree covers.

Understanding the Difference

Prosthodontist vs. General Dentist

Both are registered dental professionals.
The difference is depth of training, scope of complexity, and the level of case they’re equipped to manage.

General Dentist

Typical cases

Check-ups, fillings, extractions, simple crowns, whitening, straightforward single implants.

Training

Undergraduate dental degree (5 years). Registered as a general dentist with AHPRA.

Treatment planning

Plans care for individual teeth in relatively straightforward situations.

When you’re referred

Handles most dental care. May refer to a specialist when a case exceeds their scope.

Specialist Prosthodontist

Typical cases

Additional 3+ years of full-time university postgraduate specialist training after the dental degree. Registered as a dental specialist with AHPRA.

Training

Complex restorations — multiple missing teeth, full arch reconstruction, severely worn dentitions, failed prior dental work, difficult implant cases.

Treatment planning

Plans the entire mouth as a system — coordinating implants, crowns, bite correction, and aesthetics in a single integrated blueprint.

When you’re referred

Receives referrals from general dentists for complex cases, but you can also self-refer directly to MDS — no GP or dentist referral required.

How to Get Started

How do patients access specialist prosthodontic care?

1

Your dentist notices something complex

Your regular dentist identifies a case — worn teeth, implant planning, failing restorations — that warrants specialist input and refers you to MDS.

2

Referral letter sent to MDS

Your dentist sends a referral with your dental history, X-rays, and notes. This helps us prepare for your first appointment.

3

Initial specialist consultation

You meet with a registered Prosthodontist at our Bulleen practice for a comprehensive assessment and treatment discussion.

4

Personalised treatment plan

A staged, fully explained treatment plan is presented — with clear timelines, options, and costs — before any treatment begins.

  • No referral? No problem. You’re welcome to contact MDS directly to book a consultation — you don’t need a referral from your dentist or GP in most cases. Simply call our team or use the online booking form to arrange your appointment.

Why should I see a prosthodontist?2026-05-05T20:19:39+10:00

A prosthodontist is a specialist who is registered with the Dental Board of Australia in the field of prosthodontics. They undergo a minimum of three years of full-time advanced training, allowing them to treat complex and difficult cases where your general dentist cannot. The primary roles of a prosthodontist are to diagnose, treat and rehabilitate patients who have lost their teeth or require advance care in oral restorative work. Their services include provision of dentures, veneers, dental implants, inlays, onlays, crowns, bridges and much more.

Differences between prosthodontist and cosmetic dentist2026-05-05T20:20:05+10:00

Since “cosmetic dentistry” is not a recognised dental specialty, a “cosmetic dentist” is a layperson’s description of a general dentist who offers treatments focussed on enhancing the aesthetics of your smile. A prosthodontist is an effective cosmetic dentist possessing advanced expertise and an appropriate educational background in this field.

A prosthodontist also has the requisite skills to coordinate and administer a full mouth reconstruction involving coordination of multiple treatments and different specialties. As the title suggests, prosthodontists further specialise in creating natural and life-like prosthetic devices to replace your missing teeth.
